MOSCOW REJECTS LINKS TO NIGERIAN FLAG PROTESTS
The Russian government has firmly denied any involvement or coordination with the recent protests in Nigeria where demonstrators were observed waving Russian flags.
In a statement issued by the Russian Embassy, officials clarified that the "Government of the Russian Federation as well as any Russian officials are not involved in these activities and do not coordinate them in any way." The embassy emphasized that Russia respects Nigeria's sovereignty and does not interfere in its domestic affairs.
The statement came in response to reports of protesters across Nigeria marching with Russian flags and chanting slogans in support of President Vladimir Putin. The demonstrations are linked to growing public frustration over Nigeria's economic woes, including soaring prices of goods and services.
Notably, the Department of State Services (DSS) in Nigeria confirmed the arrest of a Kano tailor accused of producing the Russian flags used in the rallies, along with his alleged sponsors. Additionally, the Chief of Defense Staff, General Christopher Mustapha, declared that individuals flying Russian flags in Nigeria have committed a treasonable offense, vowing that the law would be enforced against such persons.
The Russian Embassy's statement underscored that the use of the Russian flag by the Nigerian protesters was a "personal choice of individuals" and did not reflect any official position or policy of the Russian government. The embassy said it respects Nigeria's democracy and condemns any disruptions or acts of violence that may arise from the demonstrations.
The developments highlight the sensitivity around the display of foreign symbols during domestic protests, as the Nigerian authorities seek to maintain control over the situation and prevent any potential escalation of tensions.
