Stoping The Next Pandemic, Starts Now.

The world was recently devastated by an unknown virus that crippled the global economy and claimed over 20 million lives. While the immediate threat of COVID-19 may have receded, the risk of new epidemics and pandemics remains ominously high.

It is only a matter of time before the next virus strikes, potentially with even more catastrophic effects. That is why the world must act now to establish a robust, coordinated preparedness and response system. This would enable us to detect and mitigate future infectious disease outbreaks faster and more equitably.

Fortunately, we now have an unprecedented array of scientific tools at our disposal - including breakthrough mRNA vaccine technology - to detect and combat emerging disease threats. We also have a clearer understanding of the viral families that pose the greatest risks.

Most crucially, there is now a blueprint to get ahead of future pandemics by dramatically accelerating the timeline from pathogen identification to emergency authorization of vaccines, treatments and tests - an ambitious "100 Days Mission" embraced by world leaders. This could give us a fighting chance to neutralize the existential threat of the next major pandemic.

Turning this vision into reality will require sustained political will and global collaboration between governments, academia, health organizations and the private sector. Later this month, a high-level Global Pandemic Preparedness Summit in Rio de Janeiro provides a vital opportunity to drive progress on this critical challenge.
